Have you noticed an increase in mental health content on your feed lately? While it can be a good thing, it can also be problematic, especially when people start self-diagnosing themselves with serious mental health disorders without seeking professional help.
Self-awareness is valuable, but it’s essential to remember that mental health conditions are complex, and diagnosis should be made by qualified mental health professionals based on a thorough assessment of an individual’s thoughts, behaviours, experiences and functioning.
Next time you see mental health or any health-related content on social media, ask yourself (4):
- Is the information presented science-based or are they based on personal opinions, experiences or anecdotes?
- Is the person sharing the information adequately trained in the topic they are addressing?
- Is this the full picture or an oversimplification of a complex issue?
If you feel like you might be struggling with your mental health, reach out to a healthcare professional – they can help you. We have resources in our reference doc as well.
A big shout out to @kenziebrenna for her tremendous insights on this topic.
