Hormones play crucial roles in the human body, but what are they and how many are there?
Hormones are the emails and text messages of our bodies. They act as messengers, but instead of being made of text, they are made of chemicals. They do not make the bridge between people, but between tissues and/or organs. They do not travel via the internet or the Cloud, but through our bloodstream (1,2,3).
Hormones are essential to many aspects of our life (1,4,5):
- Growth and development
- Sexual function
- Cognitive function and mood
- Body temperature and thirst
- Sleep cycle
- Stress management
Hormones are secreted by multiple glands located all over our body. Together, these glands form the endocrine system (1).
So how many hormones are there?
To date, scientists have identified over 50 hormones in the human body (1,3,6,7). Each plays a critical and well-orchestrated role in your well-being. Having too much or too little of certain hormones can cause health issues. You can talk to your healthcare provider if you have questions about your hormone health.
